1989 Pro Set Errors & Variations Binder
Updated December 18, 2014Description: This binder was produced and passed out to company employees to document the results of the "Living Set" concept. It was made to look and feel like the same material used on footballs. Wilson must have been a sponsor as their name was prominently displayed on the top. The plastic sheets used were made especially for this binder (by Enor?). They present the errors and corrections and fronts and backs. You will probably never see anything else like them.
Content: Explanation cards were made for each error. They discussed the when, where, how, and why of the cards. I believe these cards to be extremely important in documenting the history of Pro Set.
As documented by pictures, each error and corrected card was presented. A third, currently unknown variation card, was used to display the side not containing an error on some of the sheets.
As an added bonus, they used TWO samples of each prototype card (see 1989 Pro Set Prototypes) to display their fronts and backs.
But not all the errors were included. The Stacey Toran Grey snipe was omitted, as well as the Earnest Byner, Gerald Riggs, and Jim McMahon 'C' variations (see 1989 Pro Set Errors & Variations). There could be more.
The 'D' Variations: Most Master Set collectors know another TWO errors were produced while printing the cards for this binder. The printers somehow mixed up the front and back plate combinations for the Earnest Byner and Gerald Riggs cards. They were printed with the correct "See also.." text on back, but without the snipes on front!! And thus, the extremely rare 'D' variations were born.

Furthermore: Ludwell Denny, CEO, Pro Set Inc., must have known back then that he was creating something special. Lud was the driving force behind all the binders produced (source: ex-Pro Set employee). He wanted all his cards to have a home. A place where the collector could display them proudly. You will find out as you read these Master Set Series, once he was gone, the binders would follow.

ReplyDeleteI have one of these Errors and Variations binders, as well as the 1989 Pro Set Owners Edition Binder and the 1992 Proline Profiles and Portraits binders. What can you tell me about them, their value? Or where I could sell them and what I should expect to get for them? When responding please email me at mmccormack1969@yahoo.com, thanks!
